How to fix a copier paper jam (and stop it happening)

Sindoh Malaysia · Updated

To clear a copier paper jam, follow the on-screen guide to the jam location, open that panel, and pull the paper out gently in the direction it travels. Remove every torn scrap, close the panels and let the machine restart. Repeated jams usually come from damp, curled or wrong-weight paper, overfilled trays or worn rollers.

Safety and liability: follow these steps at your own risk and only as far as your device’s manual allows. Switch off and unplug before reaching inside. Read the full notice at the end of this guide.

Before you start

Safety first: switch the machine off and unplug it before reaching inside, and take care, as the fuser area can be very hot. Never use sharp tools to pull out paper.

Clearing the jam

  • Read the message on the control panel. Most MFPs show where the jam is.
  • Open only the panel or tray it points to.
  • Hold the paper with both hands and pull it out slowly, in the direction the paper moves.
  • Check for torn scraps. Even a small piece can cause the next jam.
  • Close every panel firmly. The machine will not restart if one is open.

Why it keeps jamming

  • Damp or curled paper. In Malaysia’s humidity, paper absorbs moisture. Keep reams sealed until use and store them flat.
  • The wrong paper. Check the tray setting matches the paper size and weight loaded.
  • Overfilled trays. Keep paper below the fill line and set the guides snugly.
  • Fanned or stuck sheets. Fan the stack before loading.
  • Worn rollers. If jams happen often in the same place, the feed rollers may need replacing.

When to call for service

Call for service if the jam message stays after the paper is cleared, you hear grinding, or jams keep recurring in the same spot.

If you rent or lease from Sindoh Malaysia, ask us how servicing is arranged under your plan. Request a service visit rather than opening panels you are unsure about.

Quick answers

Why does my copier keep jamming?

Common causes are damp or curled paper, the wrong paper size or weight for the tray setting, overfilled trays, torn scraps left inside, and worn feed rollers. If jams keep happening in the same place, ask for a service visit.
